Many Nigerians don’t know that a country like India makes more money from software than from any other source. And some many people do not know that significant number of this software is entertainment software like music and movies CDs and DVDs.
So why are we different why can’t this country earn more foreign exchange from these neglected sources?
The reason is quite simple.
One: poor quality production of our products
Two: poor marketing strategy
Lets address problem one
MOVIE
Nigerian movie industry id bedeviled by many demons prominent among them is the issue of recycled scripts. Greed has made the marketer to cut corners all in bid to stop or at least reduce the price they pay for script. Because of this script writing as an art is almost dead in the country because no one wants to write scripts all year round and end up begging for food while some people are smiling to the bank plagiarizing his intellectual property.
We have good actors, good producers, good directors, good welfare, good D.O.P, good cameras and other things just name it we have it. But script and unwillingness of the marketers to pay good money for good script is still a problem till date this has caused a dearth of good stories and with it good movies.
Take it or leave without a good script you will not have a good movie. The issue of using and re-using the same script by illiterate and semi illiterate marketers is now killing their brain child Nollywood. The time is now ripe for professionally minded individual to take away this child from these people before they kill her through ignorance.
MUSIC
Don’t mind the current revolution in our music industry we have not scratched the surface of the type of money that can be made through music. The reason for this is quite simple, Nigeria as a country is just beginning to market her music to other countries of the world. The problem is that the level of penetration is still quite poor. For example it is still mainly Nigerians and other Africans that listen to Nigerian music the craze for Nigerian music has not penetrated into western countries but I am sure with good production and improved marketing the sky will be mainly a stepping stone.
Come to think of it the foreign music is now dwindling in real quality the only thing still constant in mainly American music is still their production quality and we are fast bridging the gap with the advent of digital music production in Nigerian music scene.
Another problem in the industry is poor self esteem, I think an average Nigerian musician has poor image of himself and this robs him of quality fan base since people are addresses the way the dress themselves.\
The marketers on their own are serving us right the poor image and peanut they pay the artistes makes the artiste to feel the impact of poor self worth and this in turn affects the marketers.
I believe that no matter the problems they are only teething problems associated by growth. One day we will get it right and everybody we produce the first truly world class artiste under a Nigerian label that is world class with a world class marketing strategy that will put the world under out feet and everyone will smile.
Enough of this sermon on the mount the first thing is that we should start by having a quality music school or at least a pseudo school that aims at teaching would be musician and producers the rudiments of the game. The time is gone where all music producers must go under the tutelage of old producers who on their own may not even know the new trends or software used in music production. Trial and error is the worst way to learn it because it might take you ages to become a half baked producers without the quality conviction that that will make you truly world class.
Mind you we all have 24hrs while you may be using your to produce half baked products someone somewhere maybe using it to produce quality products that commands good price.
